Job Description
We are looking for designers/flag makers to design and make a set of flags that can be used to create a striking visual presence around the outside of the Fishing Heritage Centre in Grimsby at the end of May 2021.

You may be a graphic designer/illustrator/artist with a great idea that will translate well onto fabric for a set of freestanding flags…or you may be a textile artist/flag maker already

Walk the Plank/The Culture House are working with the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre to commission a set of new flags or banners that celebrate Grimsby’s historic connections to fishing and the sea, supported by Grimsby Creates through the Culture Recovery Fund. The flags will be unveiled at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre during Whit Week 2021 to celebrate its thirtieth anniversary; used for the Festival of the Sea in July, and subsequently available to other events in the town by mutual arrangement.

Artists / illustrators in North East Lincs and beyond are encouraged to respond to a brief which invites fresh and bold imagery inspired by fish, fishing, and the sea… the décor will be used across diverse future events in Grimsby’s calendar.

The Budget
Up to £3k available depending on the methodology- your proposal will need to cover the creation of a set of durable flags/banners, which are weatherproof in terms of rain and UV damage (on the basis of being used up to four times a year for three years), and should include rigging equipment (poles, stands etc) and storage bags/boxes.

You will also be expected to be present at the Grimsby Fishing Heritage Centre for the unveiling, and be available for press calls linked to the anniversary.

How to Apply
Please send us in a combined document the items listed below to info@walktheplank.co.uk
– links to your work
– a short proposal
– a budget which outlines how many flags, made using what materials/techniques
– confirmation that you can make the finished flags by the end of May 2021 ready for installation alongside the other flags/windsocks that will be used.

We can offer the expertise of an experienced artist to support you if you don’t have experience of making and rigging flags, who will also be part of the selection process.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of this brief please contact Liz Pugh, Creative Producer via liz@walktheplank.co.uk

Submission Deadline
Wednesday 21 April 2021, 5pm GMT

We will confirm the selected artist by Monday 26 April which allows four weeks for the design and making process.

*Please feel free to pass this information onto any other interested parties.
