Denys Baptiste’s The Late Trane

We change direction and turn down the lights for British saxophonist and composer Denys Baptiste – one of the most celebrated and important jazz musicians in the UK today – as he presents his new album, The Late Trane, a re-imagining of the late period music of John Coltrane.
This work balances Baptiste’s unique artistic vision with the emotion and cosmic references of Coltrane’s later work: surely some of the most spiritually charged music of the 20th century.
The Late Trane is a reverent acknowledgement of this remarkable man and his music, by an artist with his own voice and his own sense of destiny.

Maja Bugge

We welcome Maja Bugge, a Norwegian cellist and composer based in Lancaster and coming to Cleethorpes for the first time. Maja performs music inspired by the simultaneously beautiful and brutal landscapes of the north of Norway, where she was born and brought up. Her unique sound – as evidenced on her CD Shelter (Euredice, 2012) – explores stillness and repetition, harmony and dissonance. Her music balances melody and rhythm with external ambience, acoustics and atmosphere.

Alan Barnes and David Newton

Alan Barnes and David Newton have been playing jazz together for nearly 40 years.
These multiple award winners cover a vast repertoire from Louis Armstrong to Chick Corea and play with an empathy and almost telepathic sympathy that can only come with experience. David is one of the greatest jazz pianists this country has ever produced and Alan never fails to impress on multi reed instruments – all the saxes, clarinet and bass clarinet.

The emphasis, as always, is on swinging, accessibility and interplay. Expect a hugely entertaining programme of straight ahead jazz flawlessly played and interspersed with lots of anecdotes and peppered with humour.
Also featuring inimitable UK bass player Dave Green together with highly reputed drummer Matt Skelton.
